IRM Model 310 Precision Ring Slitter — Heavy-Duty In-Line Tube Mill Edge Conditioning
The IRM Model 310 Precision Ring Slitter is a heavy-duty, light-gauge circular-knife slitting machine engineered to run in line with a tube forming and welding mill, slitting incoming coil stock to finished strip width while delivering the clean, square, burr-free edge that high-quality tube welding demands. This build is purpose-configured for demanding, hard-to-slit materials — including Inconel and other high-strength, work-hardening alloys — where cutting forces, tooling wear, and edge quality all place greater demands on the machine.
In a welded-tube operation, the slit edge becomes the weld seam. Any burr, edge roll-over, or excessive camber carried out of the slitter feeds straight into the weld box, where it shows up as inconsistent fusion, seam defects, and downstream scrap. The Model 310 is built to eliminate that risk at the source. Precision-ground circular knives, rigid arbor support, and accurate control of knife clearance and penetration produce a true shear break rather than a torn or burred edge — presenting the tube mill with strip that is ready to form and weld with minimal to no secondary edge conditioning.
Because this machine is built to slit hard, high-strength alloys such as Inconel, it is constructed for heavy-duty service and outfitted with premium, high-quality tooling material selected to hold a keen cutting edge and resist wear under the elevated cutting forces these materials generate. Rigid arbors and robust drive components maintain accurate knife geometry cut after cut, delivering consistent edge quality and extended tooling life even on the most demanding materials.
Central to that edge quality is the machine's adjustable steel stripper ring assembly. Precision-ground steel stripper rings ride on a set of four full-width rollers that span the arbor — front-top, rear-top, front-bottom, and rear-bottom — positioned on either side of and above and below the slitting knives. Adjusting these rollers moves the stripper rings as a bank: in and out to dial in clearance to the knives, and up and down to set stripper height relative to the pass line. This lets the operator precisely position the strippers against the strip right at the point of cut, supporting the material on both faces so the edge can't lift, fold, or tear as the knives penetrate — the conditions that produce burr and edge roll-over. Because the strippers are hardened steel and mechanically adjustable rather than fixed or compressible, edge support can be re-optimized for each gauge, width, and material the line runs, and reset repeatably from job to job. The rollers also strip the slit material cleanly off the knives as it exits the cut, preventing wrap and keeping the strip tracking straight into the tube mill.
The controls are built for true in-line operation. The system is configured to communicate with your tube forming machine and match line speed, synchronizing the slitter to the forming mill so strip is delivered at the correct rate without slack or tension buildup. The controls also coordinate with your existing payoff feeding incoming coil stock into the slitter, ensuring consistent, uninterrupted material presentation to the knives and stable running across the full coil.
Built on precision circular knives mounted on stiff, accurately located arbors, the Model 310 delivers stable, repeatable light-gauge slitting. Every unit is built with new UL508A electrical controls, an inverter-duty AC drive, and fully guarded nip points, and is configured to the voltage, line speed, and strip width your operation requires.
This configuration is not fixed — the machine can be specified, changed, and updated as needed to suit your material, gauge range, strip widths, and integration requirements. Contact IRM to tailor the build to your line.
