The IRM Model 6030 3” x 6” x 30” 4-High Work Roll Driven Heated Rolling Mill is a precision-engineered 4-high rolling mill designed for controlled reduction of specialty and composite materials requiring elevated temperature processing and accurate force management. The mill features a rigid fabricated housing and a work-roll driven configuration, optimizing torque transmission and minimizing slippage during multi-pass reductions.
The 4-high arrangement utilizes 3” diameter hardened work rolls supported by 6” diameter backup rolls across a 30” face width. This configuration reduces work roll deflection, improves roll parallelism, and enhances thickness uniformity across the full working area.
Power Screwdown System
The mill is equipped with dual heavy-duty power screwdown gearboxes driven by inverter-duty AC motors with integrated absolute encoders for precise positional control. The assemblies are mounted on a precision Blanchard-ground base plate to ensure alignment integrity and long-term structural stability. The complete power screwdown system is installed directly onto the mill heads and screw mechanisms, enabling accurate and repeatable roll gap adjustment, including under loaded conditions. Encoder feedback provides synchronized positioning of both screwdowns to maintain roll parallelism across the full face width. All screwdown controls are integrated into a swing-arm operator station, allowing smooth, coordinated adjustment during setup and rolling operations. This system supports enhanced gauge control, improved repeatability between passes, and simplified operator adjustment during thin-gauge and multi-pass reduction schedules.
Heated Work Roll System
Each work roll is bored to accept internal cartridge heaters capable of achieving roll surface temperatures up to 450°F. Temperature is precisely controlled through digital heat controllers located in the central operating station, with thermocouples providing real-time monitoring and closed-loop feedback. This system minimizes thermal shock to the rolls while maintaining consistent roll surface temperature during hot rolling operations. Stable roll temperature improves material flow, supports uniform reductions, and contributes to more consistent overall process performance. All required guarding, insulation, and safety features are incorporated to ensure safe operation at elevated temperatures.
Load Cell Force Monitoring System
High-capacity load cells are installed within each mill head to measure separating force during rolling. Real-time force data is displayed digitally at the operating station, providing operators with a reliable reference point for rolling pressure control. The load monitoring system improves process repeatability, supports consistent setup between passes, and protects mill components from overload conditions.
Combined with a variable speed AC drive system and industrial-grade electrical controls, the IRM 6030 provides a rigid, temperature-controlled, and force-monitored rolling platform suitable for multi-pass reduction of specialty materials and carrier-supported processing applications.
