The mill can be operated in either 2-High or 4-High configuration, providing flexibility for a range of hot and cold rolling applications. The machine utilizes approximately 2" diameter x 8" wide work rolls and 6" diameter x 8" wide backup rolls in the 4-High configuration. The work rolls are manufactured from M2 tool steel, while the backup rolls are manufactured from high-carbon chromium alloy steel. The mill provides approximately 100,000 lbs of separating force and is equipped with a 20 HP drive system.
The machine will be supplied with internally heated backup rolls, a load cell system, and IRM's standard data acquisition system to support elevated-temperature rolling, roll-force measurement, process monitoring, and collection of rolling data.
As part of IRM's factory refurbishment, the mill will be inspected, serviced, and reconditioned as required and supplied with modern variable-speed electrical controls. Entry and exit tables and guarding of the machine's nip points will also be incorporated into the completed machine configuration.
MILL CONSTRUCTION
The TA-315 utilizes a heavy-duty industrial mill frame and housing assembly designed to provide the rigidity and stability required for laboratory rolling applications. The mill supports the roll assemblies, bearings, screwdown system, drivetrain, entry and exit tables, guarding, instrumentation, and related components within a compact laboratory-scale configuration.
The combination 2-High / 4-High arrangement provides a flexible platform for material research and process development. The 2-High configuration can be utilized where the larger roll geometry is appropriate for the intended process, while the 4-High configuration utilizes smaller work rolls supported by larger backup rolls for applications requiring the benefits of smaller work-roll diameter.
The mill frame, housings, roll assemblies, bearings, screwdowns, drivetrain, and related mechanical components will be inspected and serviced as part of IRM's factory refurbishment.
ROLL ASSEMBLY & BEARINGS
The mill is equipped with approximately 2" diameter x 8" wide M2 tool-steel work rolls and 6" diameter x 8" wide high-carbon chromium alloy-steel backup rolls. The listed roll finish is satin.
In the 4-High configuration, the smaller-diameter work rolls contact the material while the larger backup rolls provide support against work-roll deflection under separating load. This arrangement provides the advantages of smaller-diameter work rolls while maintaining the structural support required for higher rolling loads.
The backup rolls incorporate an internal heating system for elevated-temperature rolling applications. Heat from the backup rolls is transferred through the roll assembly to preheat the work rolls prior to and during operation.
Rolls, bearings, chocks, seals, and related components will be inspected and serviced as required during refurbishment to establish proper alignment and operating condition.
ROLL ADJUSTMENT / SCREWDOWN
The TA-315 is equipped with a dual-handwheel mechanical screwdown system allowing roll adjustment simultaneously or independently. Simultaneous adjustment provides convenient overall roll-position changes, while independent adjustment allows each side of the roll assembly to be adjusted individually for roll parallelism and alignment.
The screwdown arrangement provides a straightforward mechanical method of establishing the required roll opening for laboratory rolling trials and process development.
Roll position and roll opening should be considered machine setup references rather than direct measurements of finished strip thickness. Final material thickness should be verified using appropriate external measurement equipment.
DRIVE SYSTEM
The mill is equipped with a 20 HP drive system suitable for laboratory hot and cold rolling applications.
The machine will be supplied with modern variable-speed AC drive controls to provide smooth and adjustable roll-speed operation. Adjustable speed allows rolling conditions to be selected based on material properties, starting geometry, reduction schedule, rolling temperature, and other process requirements.
The machine is presently specified for 480V, 3-phase electrical service with variable-speed AC inverter control.
HEATED ROLL SYSTEM
The TA-315 will be supplied with internally heated backup rolls for elevated-temperature rolling applications. Cartridge heaters installed internally within the backup rolls provide controlled roll heating, with thermocouples and closed-loop temperature controllers providing real-time temperature monitoring and feedback.
Heat from the backup rolls is transferred through the roll assembly to the work rolls, providing a means of preheating the work-roll assembly prior to rolling and helping maintain an elevated roll temperature during operation.
The heated-roll system can be designed for controlled backup-roll temperatures up to approximately 450°F (232°C). The actual work-roll surface temperature will depend on heat transfer through the roll assembly, operating conditions, rolling speed, material temperature, and other process variables. The workpiece entering the roll bite may be at a substantially higher temperature than the controlled backup-roll temperature.
Preheating the roll assembly reduces the temperature differential between a heated workpiece and the roll surfaces, helping minimize thermal shock and establish a more stable thermal condition during rolling. This is particularly beneficial for repeated elevated-temperature rolling trials where introducing high-temperature material to a cold roll assembly can create significant and rapidly changing thermal conditions.
Higher controlled roll temperatures can be evaluated but may require alternate heater, bearing, lubrication, or related thermal design considerations.
LOAD CELL SYSTEM
The mill will be equipped with a load cell system for measurement of separating force during rolling. Roll-force measurement provides valuable process information for laboratory research, material characterization, process development, and evaluation of rolling parameters.
Measured separating force can be displayed to the operator and incorporated into the machine's data acquisition system, allowing roll-force information to be correlated with other available process parameters during rolling trials.
STANDARD DATA ACQUISITION SYSTEM
The TA-315 will include IRM's standard data acquisition system for monitoring and recording available machine and process parameters.
Available recorded parameters can include roll separating force, roll temperature, roll speed, and other configured process signals. Process information can be recorded in CSV format to an SD card for subsequent analysis, documentation, and comparison of rolling trials.
The data acquisition system provides a practical method of capturing process information for laboratory research, material testing, process development, and documentation of rolling trials.
CONTROLS & OPERATION
The refurbished mill will be supplied with modern electrical controls configured for straightforward and reliable laboratory operation. The control system will incorporate variable-speed drive control, machine start/stop functions, adjustable roll speed, forward/reverse operation, emergency-stop circuitry, heated-roll temperature controls, load-cell instrumentation, data acquisition, and other controls and safety functions appropriate to the final machine configuration.
Entry and exit tables will be installed to support material as it approaches and exits the roll bite, and the machine's nip points will be guarded as part of the completed configuration.
The control arrangement will integrate the primary rolling, heating, instrumentation, and data-acquisition functions into a coordinated machine system suitable for laboratory research and process-development work.
IRM FACTORY REFURBISHMENT
The Stanat TA-315 will be factory refurbished by International Rolling Mills (IRM) prior to shipment.
The refurbishment process will include inspection and servicing of the mill's primary mechanical systems, including the frame and housings, roll assemblies, bearings, screwdowns, drivetrain, and related components. Worn or unsuitable components will be repaired or replaced as required to establish proper machine operation.
