IRM INLINE HIGH-TEMPERATURE MUFFLE FURNACE
MACHINE OVERVIEW
The IRM Inline High-Temperature Muffle Furnace is designed for material heating prior to hot rolling, laboratory research, metallurgical studies, and process-development applications.
The furnace will feature a high-temperature stainless steel muffle heated by silicon carbide elements, with a maximum furnace operating temperature of 2300°F. The electrical system will be configured for 220 VAC, single-phase service.
The inline design positions the furnace exit close to the mill’s nip point, allowing heated material to advance directly from the heating zone into the rolls. This arrangement minimizes heat loss during transfer, supports more consistent rolling temperatures, and reduces operator handling of hot material.
FURNACE CONSTRUCTION & HEATING SYSTEM
The furnace will utilize a high-temperature stainless steel muffle heated by silicon carbide heating elements.
The muffle will accommodate samples within the agreed chamber dimensions, with appropriate clearance for loading, unloading, and material handling.
The furnace will be mounted on a mobile base with locking wheels, allowing it to be positioned and secured for use with the rolling mill or moved for independent heating operations.
Final operating conditions, including temperature, soak time, and atmosphere, will be reviewed during engineering to confirm suitability for the muffle and the customer’s intended process.
TEMPERATURE CONTROLS
A Watlow temperature controller located in a central control panel will provide furnace temperature adjustment and monitoring.
Heating temperature and soak time will be selected to suit the customer’s material and process requirements. Actual workpiece temperature and heating time will vary with material type, sample dimensions, loading, and operating conditions.
ATMOSPHERE CONNECTION
The muffle will include a fitting for introducing a customer-supplied process atmosphere into the chamber.
The intended atmosphere and associated gas-supply requirements will be coordinated during final engineering. The atmosphere connection alone does not constitute a sealed or oxygen-free processing system.
MILL INTEGRATION & MATERIAL HANDLING
The heating chamber’s exit pass line will be aligned with the mill entrance table, with the furnace positioned close to the roll bite. A supplied push rod will allow the operator to move material into and out of the furnace and advance heated samples toward the rolls.
In a conventional furnace arrangement, the operator must remove hot material from a separate furnace, transfer it to the mill table, and then feed it into the rolls. Material loses heat throughout this sequence, introducing variation in temperature immediately before rolling.
The inline arrangement minimizes these transfer steps by allowing material to move directly from the heating zone into the nip point. Reducing the time and distance between heating and rolling helps maintain the intended processing temperature and improves repeatability between passes and samples.
This arrangement also provides a safer material-handling approach by reducing the need for the operator to lift, carry, and reposition hot samples between separate pieces of equipment. The push rod further reduces direct handling during transfer.
ELECTRICAL REQUIREMENTS
The furnace will be configured for 220 VAC, single-phase service.
Final connected load, required amperage, and electrical connection requirements will be confirmed during engineering.
APPROXIMATE DIMENSIONS & WEIGHT
Proposed furnace chamber: 26" long × 6" wide × 2.5" high. Chamber dimensions can be reconfigured in consultation with the customer to accommodate their sample sizes, material geometry, and processing requirements.
Overall equipment dimensions: approximately 48" long × 24" wide × 60" high.
Equipment weight: approximately 1,000 lbs.
Final dimensions, weight, and installation requirements will be confirmed during engineering based on the selected chamber configuration.
PROCESS CAPABILITY
The furnace is designed to support controlled material heating for laboratory, R&D, metallurgical research, and rolling-process development.
When integrated with the rolling mill, the furnace provides a means of heating samples and transferring them directly toward the roll bite with minimal handling and temperature loss. It may also be operated independently for material-heating trials.
Adjustable furnace temperature allows the customer to investigate different heating conditions, soak times, and rolling temperatures within the equipment’s operating limits.
Actual heating performance, workpiece temperature, temperature uniformity, surface condition, and processing results will vary based on material properties, sample geometry, loading, atmosphere, soak time, transfer time, and other process variables.
The maximum furnace temperature is an equipment operating limit and does not constitute a guarantee of workpiece temperature or suitability for every material or atmosphere. Final processing parameters will be established based on the customer’s material and application requirements.
SAFETY
IRM furnaces are industrial thermal-processing machines intended for operation by trained and qualified personnel.
Although the inline arrangement reduces handling of hot material, operation still involves exposure to high temperatures, hot samples, and the rolling mill’s pinch points. Appropriate operating procedures, handling tools, and personal protective equipment are required.
Final safeguarding requirements may vary based on the installation, furnace positioning, material-handling arrangement, selected atmosphere, and intended application.
The customer is responsible for ensuring that the completed installation and operation comply with applicable safety requirements and for providing any additional site- or application-specific safeguarding required for its use.
WARRANTY
New and IRM factory-refurbished equipment is supplied with IRM's standard one-year limited warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship under normal use and service.
See IRM's Standard Terms and Conditions for complete warranty terms, limitations, and exclusions.
