IRM MODEL 4040 4" x 4" 2-HIGH LABORATORY ROLLING MILL
MACHINE OVERVIEW
The IRM Model 4040 4" x 4" 2-High Laboratory Rolling Mill is a compact, heavy-duty rolling system designed for laboratory research, metallurgical studies, material development, process development, and specialty rolling applications.
The mill features nominally 4" diameter x 4" wide work rolls, approximately 40,000 lbs of separating-force capacity, and a 3 HP variable-speed AC drive. Power is transmitted through a separate pinion stand and universal-joint drive shafts to drive both the upper and lower rolls. The machine incorporates a dual-sidewheel manual screwdown assembly for independent roll-gap adjustment and is configured for 480 VAC, 3-phase electrical service.
The complete assembly is mounted on a heavy-duty mobile steel cart, providing a compact, self-contained rolling system suitable for laboratories, research facilities, and specialty manufacturing environments.
MILL CONSTRUCTION & ROLL ASSEMBLY
The Model 4040 utilizes a rigid industrial mill housing designed to maintain roll alignment and stability under substantial separating loads.
The 4" diameter work rolls provide a practical balance between roll-bite geometry, rolling force, and machine size, while the 4" working face is particularly suited for laboratory strip rolling, preparation of test specimens, and small-batch material processing.
The upper roll position is controlled by a dual-sidewheel manual screwdown assembly. Each side can be adjusted independently, allowing the operator to establish the desired roll opening and make corrections to roll parallelism.
The mill stand, pinion stand, motor, and associated drive components are mounted together on a heavy-duty steel mobile cart equipped with industrial casters. This provides a compact installation that can be repositioned within a laboratory or production facility without requiring permanent floor mounting.
Entry and exit tables are included to support material handling and alignment through the roll bite. Additional roll materials, surface finishes, and application-specific tooling may be available to accommodate different processing requirements.
MACHINE DRIVE & ELECTRICAL CONTROLS
The mill is powered by a 3 HP AC gearmotor with a KBAC variable-frequency drive, providing adjustable rolling speeds for different materials, reduction schedules, and experimental processing conditions.
The motor drives a separate heavy-duty pinion stand, which distributes power to both work rolls through universal-joint drive shafts. This arrangement provides positive mechanical drive to the upper and lower rolls while accommodating changes in roll opening.
The electrical system is configured for 480 VAC, 3-phase service.
AVAILABLE OPTIONAL FEATURES & UPGRADES
**Heated Roll Package:** Internally heated rolls utilizing electric cartridge heaters with closed-loop digital temperature control. The system can provide roll temperatures up to approximately 450°F (232°C), allowing controlled roll preheating for warm and hot rolling applications. Preheating helps reduce thermal shock when processing heated material and can improve temperature consistency during experimental rolling.
**Load Cell Package:** Integrated separating-force measurement with digital readout for real-time monitoring of rolling loads and process development.
**Data Acquisition System:** Touchscreen HMI with process data logging for monitoring and recording available operating parameters.
**Custom Roll Tooling:** Additional roll sets, specialized roll materials, grooved rolls, and application-specific roll profiles.
Other modifications and custom features may be available upon request, subject to engineering review.
PROCESS CAPABILITY
The IRM Model 4040 is designed for controlled cold rolling of a variety of metallic materials, with optional heated rolls available to expand its capabilities for warm and hot rolling applications.
Typical applications include:
- Laboratory strip rolling and thickness reduction
- Metallurgical research and alloy development
- Preparation of rolled test specimens
- Development and evaluation of reduction schedules
- Material deformation and work-hardening studies
- Small-batch specialty rolling and pilot-scale trials
- Warm and hot rolling research with appropriate optional equipment
The combination of industrial construction, adjustable rolling speed, and manual roll-gap control provides a versatile platform for investigating material behavior and developing repeatable rolling processes.
Actual rolling performance, achievable reductions, and finished dimensions will depend on material properties, starting dimensions, reduction per pass, rolling speed, available motor torque, roll condition, temperature, and other process variables.
SAFETY
IRM rolling mills are industrial metal-processing machines intended for operation by trained and qualified personnel.
The Model 4040 is supplied with guarding and safety features appropriate to the specified configuration. Final safeguarding requirements may vary depending on the installation, material-handling arrangement, and intended application.
The mobile cart must be secured against unintended movement during rolling operations.
The customer is responsible for ensuring that the completed installation and operation comply with applicable safety requirements.
